WEST VIRGINIA SHREWSBURY GENEALOGY
My husband family line is Lesher from West Virginia his mom was a Shrewsbury which name is quiet well known in connection with WV. The Old Stone House was built by her great great grandfather Samuel Shrewsbury who has quite a history in WV.
The earliest traceable ancestor of the Kanwha county branch of Shrewsburys was Samuel Sr. born 1763. On October 8, 1796 three years before his death Samuels father in law Colonel John Dickinson conveyed a tract of 704 acres of land on the Kanawha to his two son in laws Samuel and John Shrewsbury. Including both the bottom and hill land it lay on the north side of the river a few miles east of Charleston, WV. Samuel and John were determined to settle on this land research reveals their first settlement in Kanawha (1798) was in a large grove of black walnut trees, which later furnished the wood for a house built by Samuel. Land was cleared and the necessary farming was done but a new interest in salt drilling developed, as this land was lying in the middle of the production area, thereby inspiring the brothers to buy adjoining acreage and become actively engaged in th growing of salt business.
Samuel soon became very prrominient, he was a justice in 1801 and other years a sheriff in 1810. It was during this time that he built the Stone House (The Stone Mansion) on the original tract.
Samuel died in 1835 and his wife Mary died 1853 they were buried in the family cemetery located on south side of their homestead near the kanawha river This cemetery was oncovered when the Diamond Alkali Company began clearing and escavating the land to build houses for their employees. Several of the houses were erected over the graves and some of the flat stone markers were used for sidewalks, about 1919-1920. Today the old stone house looks much as it did 180 years ago. The House was placed on the National Registry of Historic Sites in 1978.
